Scholars and practitioners often identify trust as one of the foremost conditions to overcome this dilemma. Intelligence services can never be sure that a partner will reciprocate in kind. It is an important tool in countering today’s complex transnational threats, but at the same time, cooperation is a risky business. ![]() International cooperation between intelligence services poses a dilemma. This study shows that transparency and secrecy are important trust work tools for creating and maintaining trust, processes that require efficient compartmentalisation of issues, roles, and contextual meaning in separate formal and informal spaces of collaboration with management to avoid co-worker suspicion or conflict with management. Shop stewards depend on co-worker trust and transparency, whereas their influence on management requires secrecy and trust, which makes shop stewards vulnerable to criticism and mistrust from their co-workers. The study is based on qualitative interviews with 29 shop stewards within the Danish care sector. In this study, we investigate how shop stewards actively navigate the transparency–secrecy nexus as trusted intermediaries to build trust and gain maximal influence over management decisions. ![]() This is particularly the case for trusted intermediaries tasked with building trust in multiple conflicting relations. Georg Simmel suggests that secrecy can serve important social purposes consequently, strategically balancing transparency and secrecy can be conducive to social cooperation and building intersubjective trust. However, people are often involved in conflicting social commitments in which transparency to one trustor may violate the trust of others. Secrecy is usually considered destructive to trust. We highlight the importance of collective elements of entrepreneurial identity and legitimacy building pointing to underlying social implications in further studying fraternal aspects of collective entrepreneurship. Enacting collective mechanisms including fraternising, legitimates both the individual and the collective. Using close reading and observational techniques we interrogate the website to uncover legitimacy building mechanisms such as alignment, association and fraternity used by exchange members. To operationalise this we examine the Scottish ‘entrepreneurial exchange’, a networking organisation for high net-worth entrepreneurs. From an organisational perspective, we know little about how successful entrepreneurs organise themselves to leverage collective legitimacy, nor the societal mechanisms used to achieve this. I've had thousands and thousands of letters and emails from people telling me that they're convinced that they know where the next box is buried. I've never had a response to an episode like the two shows that we previously made. I've been making TV for 11 or 12 years now. And then in 2004 two lawyers from New Jersey discovered the second box buried in Cleveland. And then 20 years went by and nobody found one. This group of friends who got together and found this treasure box in their home city. And so about a year after the book was published, the first box was founded by these three teenagers in Chicago, which ended up itself being kind of an amazing story. He buried 12 treasure boxes in 12 parks across America and then published this book, which you have to use to find your way to those different boxes. This author Byron published this book and did this really brave in thing.
